But the biggest concern is your URL structure. Search engines, including Google, do remember your old URLs, have them cached and hardly will index the same content under different URLs or give them significantly less value compared to the original URLs.
Let’s say you had on Joomla www.site.com/content/view/23/45
after moving to Wordpress you have something like www.site.com/contentview2345.
That’s the BIG issue
The solution might be as following:

1. Create HTML site-map of your desired (old Joomla) URLs, put it into footer of WP. Here is a useful plugin for generating HTML sitemaps in Wordpress.
2. Create XML sitemap with old Joomla URLs, here is useful plugin, and submit it via Google Webmaster.
3. Finally do the main thing: download and install Redirection plugin. Then manually, yes manually (are you scared of this word?:) make 301 permanent redirect of each WP URL to the desired (your old Joomla) URL.

Hope it helps.

You must create the table for it to work.” appears and tables is not possible to create via WP’s admin. I had the same problem. After clicking “Create tables” nothing happens.

So what I’ve done to get it working:

I made backup, export content and drop current WP installation, then installed older WordPress version 2.9.2

Installed Contact Form 7 making sure it works fine

And only then I upgraded WordPress to current version (3.0.1) in my case.

Have no idea why and whether it’s most sophisticated way or not, but it DOES work.
I also won’t recommend to upgrade Contact Form 7 via your WP’s backend now unless that database problem will be solved. (Who knows, maybe Mr. Takayukister already solved that – I don’t know:)

Personally I don’t like pop-up ads jumping at you from the middle of the screen screaming “take me now, baby”.
Footer ads seem to be more “polite” and not so obtrusive.
However it’s always good idea to test both and see which one brings you more optin subscribers.

Currently I see two best options on a market:
1) Ultimate Footer Ad – http://www.ultimatefooterad.com
requires mySQL database to be installed. After installation you run web-based software to create own footers.

2) Advanced DHTML Popup Pro – http://www.dpopup.com/dhtml-popup-examples.html
is a regular software you install on your computer and can create footers working offline.

Both allow to create unlimited number of footers which you may install on unlimited number of domains.
Pretty fair.

In this article I will tell how to integrate one of the most popular email marketing solutions called AWeber (www.aweber.com) into Ultimate Ad Footer.

For your convenience have two tabs of your favorite browser open:
1. Open your Aweber account, create a web form, choose “I Will Install My Form” and then “Raw HTML Version” option.

2. Go to admin area of your Ultimate Footer Ad (let’s call it UFA further).
Usually it is http://www.yourdomainurl.com/UltimateFooterAd/admin/index.php
Create a new ad or select from list a previously created one.

3. From “SELECT AD TYPE” drop down menu select “Optin”.

Fill out all neccessary fields like Ad Name, select colors, font sizes and types, choose desired template and color scheme.
Then scroll down and see the window “Optin Code [PHP-Snippet-Enabled]:”

4. Return to the tab with Aweber open and from “Raw HTML Version” highlight the code from<form method=> till ending right after </form>
Copy that piece of code.

5. Return to UFA tab and paste the code into “Optin code” window.

Scroll to the bottom and click “Create Ad”.
You are done.

6. Now return to the top and select the ad you created from drop down list.
You will get a code to place into your page immediately before tag.
That’s all. Enjoy!

7. P.S. The authors of UFA don’t warn you that Ultimate Footer Ad doesn’t work properly in Internet Explorer unless you have install UFA on each and every domain. And I found that to be not fair…
For example you have a web-site www.siteA.com with SQL database and install UFA there – no problem – Ultimate Footer shows up in every popular browser including IE.
But you also have a site www.siteB.com which doesn’t have SQL database and you don’t wanna pay for an additional one.
You are trying to use the Footer Ad created on site A, but it doesn’t show background of the right part of the footer on site B. And while it’s working perfectly in all browsers - it doesn’t show up the background in Internet Explorer.
The authors said it’s because of IE security not allowing crossbrowsing. Well… why didn’t you tell me that before I buy… that’s why I find it not being fair enough.

But, surprisingly, NO:)
The easiest way is to install WP in your language is:
just go to http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_in_Your_Language, download the package, install it manually (having created database and user in phpMyAdmin before) and have fun.

If you have automatic installation in your language inside your hosting CPanel – then it’s just a matter of few clicks.

But what to do if you have your installation in default English, tons of posts, pictures and medias and just too lazy (as I am) to make backups, uninstalling and installing WP again? And that’s all only for sake of Cyrillic characters displaying as endless ???????????????????????????

To solve problem with Cyrillic characters in WP:
1. Go again to http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_in_Your_Language
What you need is two files in your language with extensions .mo and .po. Actually you may download the full installation package of WP in you language and extract /language folder from /wp-content and then upload the whole folder to your existing installation.
2. Let’s assume you just have got two files let’s say in Ukrainian uk.mo and uk.po
Using FTP client go to your WP installation and enter /wp-content or /wp-includes.
Then create folder /languages
Upload both files into that folder.
3. Download wp-config to your harddrive and open it with Notepad or any other simple text editor (no MS Word allowed).
Find:
/** Database Charset to use in creating database tables. */

define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘utf-8′);
change to:

/** Database Charset to use in creating database tables. */

define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘windows-1251′);

4. Upload wp-config back rewriting previous version.
5. That should solve the problem.

Of course, they consider themselves smart guys hoping to find fools around and get good link to their site while posting backlink on a shitty resource.
But… they are cheaters.
That’s why I’m writing this post.
There are several observations on link exchange topic.

1. Don’t propose me shitty sites for link exchange.
Meaning I don’t want a link from a page located zillion clicks from Home page and be hardly indexed by Google.
I don’t want link exchange with a web-site specially built for link exchange purpose – it’s like plaque epidemy now – 50% of proposals contain reciprocal URL of a shitty site having no information, no sense, nothing except links.
2. Don’t propose me triangle exchange – it’s not good. I just said – it’s not good.
3. If you have, for example, legal web-site - don’t make a link farm on your site proposing to “post your link in a relevant category”.
There’s NO relevancy in this case. You run legal site – have legal links – SE will love you.
4. When you write me a letter about exchange – be short and exact – sometimes it’s hard to recognize the meaning between “Oh, if you receive this message by mistake, I apologize. I’ve manually selected you site between.. your site is so informative..etc”. No BS, please. I know my web-site is the best at minimum. Be so kind to clearly state what you want.
If you propose me what I need – excellent, no excuses needed, if you propose me shit – no excuses accepted:)
5. In initial letter provide URL where you plan to put my link, not only “I have a wonderful web-site, let’s exchange links”.
I have to see what’s the reciprocal page value is.
6. Read what webmasters request on links exchange page. If I say “the reciprocal page page must be cached by Google” and you send me non-cached – you steal my time, you steal your time, you are an ignorant non-attentive asshole.
7. Be honest and don’t remove my link and I will bring you more sites in the future.
GOOD, relevant sites. Because I trust you.

In browser’s address bar favicon appears on the left side right before URL.

To insert favicon into your page you need to:
1. Create an image you’d like to be a favicon fo your site
2. Create a favicon from image with .ico resolution – how to read below
3. Upload favicon to your web site’s files folder
4. Insert one of these pieces of code between <head> and </head> tags:

<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”favicon.ico”>
<link rel=”icon” type=”image/gif” href=”animated_favicon1.gif”>

Generally favicons could be 16×16 or 32×32 pixels, and animated or static.

Let me introduce the web service I use for creating favicons for years and am very pleased with.
A nice addition – this service is free, so go ahead and create your favicon for free!

I’ve tested this solution on both WordPress and regular HTML site just embedding the code inside the table.

So what is the secret and why the code proposed by Facebook developer’s guide didn’t work. The answer is: you need to use iframes in order to get Fan Box working.

You may read Robert’s post on how to do it right, but here is the brief solution:

1. Copy this code to Notepad (any other editing program):

<iframe scrolling=”no” frameborder=”0″ src=”http://www.facebook.com/connect/connect.php?id=……….&connections=10&stream=0&css=PATH_TO_STYLE_SHEET&locale=your_LOCALE” allowtransparency=”true” style=”border: none; width: 300px; height: 250px;”></iframe> <div style=”font-size:8px; padding-left:10px”></div>

2. Change this id=………. to your Facebook ID. To find out what is your FB ID, go to your profile and click your profile’s image in upper left corner. After new window is open look at the URL in browser’s address field. Last numeric part of that is your Facebook ID (something long like 105510822813755)

3. In WordPress go to widget section, put a Text widget into a place you want FanBox to appear (mainly your sidebar) and paste the code into the text widget. Save it.

4. Adjust settings:

connections=10 is number of fans to display

stream=1 – your post appear in widget. To turn it off just change “1″ to “0″

width and height are pretty self explanatory

For HTML just copy and paste the code as you would do with any embedded object.

That’s it. With installing Facebook Fan Box widget your conversion of fans should increase pretty soon:)

The most important is to ease crawling of your site by robots and getting your pages into index of search engines.
Let’s assume you may type:
mysite.com
www.mysite.com
mysite.com/
mysite.com/index.php
www.mysite.com/index.php

In essence after calling any of those URLs you see them showing same content on the same page. But that’s you… just imagine that for search engines they ALL are DIFFERENT URLs.
First, search engines getting confused as to which page to consider you main page.
Second, Google (as the most important search engine) assigns its Page Rank to each of those URLs, thus you have PR split between several URLs instead of having all strength in one fist.

This split got its name canonical URLs or canonicalization issue.
How to solve this problem?
1. The easiest with 301 redirect in .htaccess
2. Paying attention all incoming links to your site have the same URL structure (i.e. www.mysite.com)
3. Internal links have the same URL structure if you use absolute URLs.
4. Creating and submitting *.xml sitemap through webmaster panels (Google, Bing)
5. Creating and placing regular sitemap (html, hph, asp etc,) on home page or even all pages of your site – could be aslo an additional navigation benefit for your visitor, not only for SE spiders.

Today we have a look at most effective way: 301 redirect.
What we need is .htaccess file which should be in your domain’s root folder. If you don’t have one, just open a Notepad and name it .htaccess. Yes, the dot should be first sign.
If you have in your root folder htaccess.txt, just rename it to .htaccess. (Note: this is all for apache servers supporting Rewrite Mode. If you don’t know – ask your hosting support.)
Also pay attention module mod_alias is on.

Redirect or RedirectPermanent with mod_alias module:

Redirect 301 /old-page.html http://new-domain.ru/new-page.html

or

Redirect permanent /old-page.html http://new-domain.ru/new-page.html

Each URL should be written in separately, which is a time consuming process.

You may use RedirectPermanent to achieve similar goal:

RedirectPermanent /old-url.html http://new-site.ru/new-url.html

RedirectMatch

I.e. to change old .php pages to new .asp

RedirectMatch /(.*)\.php$ /$1.aspx

Redirect with mod_rewrite

From www to non-www:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.(.*) [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://%1/$1 [R=301,L]

or

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Redirect from non-www to www:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

or

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.(.*) [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%1/$1 [R=301,L]

Redirect using script or sending headers

HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently

PHP Redirect

However, we all are lazy people, and when it comes to convenience, we will do anything to ease our lives. So I decided to move one of my sites built with Joomla to WP platform to have convenience and write posts faster. Searching the web I’ve found this useful Mambo2Wordpress Import Wizard developed by Rodney Blevins. Notice: Mambo is previous name of Joomla. Using this wizard I was able to move my Joomla site to WordPress. So, thank you, Rodney!

I tried to use it for Joomla 1.0.15 and it worked out to export all my messages into the WordPress 2.9.2. Of course, there is still some work to make images and embedded videos to work in WP, make your posts nicely laid out etc,. especially if you used Joomla components and plugins. But in the end I found it better, than recreating all my posts on WP from scratch:)

Step by Step Tutorial on How To Migrate from Joomla 1.0 to WordPress

(If both of your installations are on the same server)

NOTE: Use it at your own risk and make sure before making next steps you have full backup of both your files and databases of your Joomla site.

1. In your root folder of WordPress installation create a new folder and name it ‘export’

2. Download ImportWizard package download link by Jason Anton’s

Unpack ZIP archive to your computer’s hard drive.

Now you have two files: index.php and config.php

3. Modify config.php inserting into upper section your Joomla site’s details and into bottom section your WordPress details. The info for both sections is standard:

- database name

- user name

- password to database

- host (in 99% it is ‘localhost’ and you don’t need to change it)

Modify if needed index.php

You should look what the prefix of your Joomla database is. By default in index.php it is set to ‘jla’, however for most Joomla databases it is ‘jos’. So just make auto replacing of all ‘jal’ with ‘jos’ or with whatever your database prefix is.

To find out what is your db prefix you may got to phpMyAdmin and look it there, but much easier way is to download your configuration.php file (from your root Joomla installation) and look this line:

4. Upload both config.php and index.php to ‘export’ folder you created in Step 1.

5. Call the import wizard by typing in browser’s address field: http://www.yoursitename.com/export/ and follow the steps needed to export your Joomla content to WordPress.

Repeat the export process as many times as need for all of your content, links etc.

6. That’s it – look for your Joomla content inside WP’s admin.

Or your http://example.com is different from http://www.example.com, so you need to solve canonicalization issue (what a word – can breake my brain:).
The easiest way to solve alike problems is using 301 redirect.
The article below, which you may find original text here: How to Redirect a Web Page Using a 301 Redirect, is well written tutorial on this subject proposing solution under different scenarios.

How to Redirect a Web Page Using a 301 Redirect

By Herman Drost

You’ve just redesigned some pages of your web site. The pages have high search engine rankings that you don’t want
to lose. How can you safely redirect web site traffic from your old pages to the new pages without losing your rankings? You can do this by using a ” 301 redirect ”

What is 301 redirect?

301 redirect is the best method to preserve your current search engine rankings when redirecting web pages or a web
site. The code “301″ is interpreted as “moved permanently”. After the code, the URL of the missing or renamed page is
noted, followed by a space, then followed by the new location or file name. You implement the 301 redirect by
creating a .htaccess file.

What is a .htaccess file?

When a visitor/spider requests a web page, your web server checks for a .htaccess file. The .htaccess file contains
specific instructions for certain requests, including security, redirection issues and how to handle certain errors.

How to implement the 301 Redirect

1. To create a .htaccess file, open notepad, name and save the file as .htaccess (there is no extension).

2. If you already have a .htaccess file on your server, download it to your desktop for editing.

3. Place this code in your .htaccess file: redirect 301 /old/old.htm http://www.you.com/new.htm

4. If the .htaccess file already has lines of code in it, skip a line, then add the above code.

5. Save the .htaccess file

6. Upload this file to the root folder of your server.

7. Test it by typing in the old address to the page you’ve changed. You should be immediately taken to the new
location.

Notes: Don’t add “http://www” to the first part of the statement – place the path from the top level of your site
to the page. Also ensure that you leave a single space between these elements:

redirect 301 (the instruction that the page has moved)

/old/old.htm (the original folder path and file name)

http://www.you.com/new.htm (new path and file name)

When the search engines spider your site again they will follow the rule you have created in your .htaccess file.
The search engine spider doesn’t actually read the .htaccess file, but recognizes the response from the server as valid.

During the next update, the old file name and path will be dropped and replaced with the new one. Sometimes you may
see alternating old/new file names during the transition period, plus some fluctuations in rankings. According to Google it will take 6-8 weeks to see the changes reflected on your pages.

Other ways to implement the 301 redirect:

1. To redirect ALL files on your domain use this in your .htaccess file if you are on a unix web server:

redirectMatch 301 ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com
redirectMatch permanent ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com

You can also use one of these in your .htaccess file:

redirect 301 /index.html http://www.domain.com/index.html
redirect permanent /index.html http://www.domain.com/index.html
redirectpermanent /index.html http://www.domain.com/index.html

This will redirect “index.html” to another domain using a 301-Moved permanently redirect.

2. If you need to redirect http://mysite.com to http://www.mysite.com and you’ve got mod_rewrite enabled on your server you can put this in your .htaccess file:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [R=permanent,L]

or this:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Tip: Use your full URL (ie http://www.domain.com) when obtaining incoming links to your site. Also use your full URL for the internal linking of your site.

3. If you want to redirect your .htm pages to .php pages
and you’ve got mod_rewrite enabled on your server you can put this in your .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule (.*).htm$ /$1.php

4. If you wish to redirect your .html or .htm pages to .shtml pages because you are using Server Side Includes (SSI) add this code to your .htaccess file:

AddType text/html .shtml
AddHandler server-parsed .shtml .html .htm
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes
DirectoryIndex index.shtml index.html

Frequently Asked Question:
What’s the difference in using a 301 redirect versus a meta redirect?

Meta Redirect
To send someone to a new page (or site) put this in the head of your
document:

Content=”10; tells the browser to wait 10 seconds before transfer, choose however long you would like, you can even
choose 0 to give a smoother transition, but some (really old) browsers aren’t capable of using this so I’d suggest
putting a link on that page to your new site for them.

With a meta redirect the page with the redirect issues a 200 OK status and some other mechanism moves the browser
over to the new URL. With a 200 OK on both pages, the search engine wants to index both the start page and the
target page – and that is a known spam method (set up 10,000 domains full of keywords for the search engines to
index then meta redirect the “real visitor” after 0 or 1 seconds to the “real site” ) so using it gets you penalized.

The 301 redirect simply issues a Permanently Moved message in the HTTP header which tells the search engine to only
index the target URL.

Conclusion: The safest way to redirect old web pages to the new pages or old web site to the new web site and keep the same search engine rankings is to use the 301 redirect. It will also pass on the page rank from your old site to your new site.

ONE OF THE RANKING FACTORS. Please think about this. Speed is not the main factor. Let’s have a look what Google has to said today: “Like us, our users place a lot of value in speed — that’s why we’ve decided to take site speed into account in our search rankings. We use a variety of sources to determine the speed of a site relative to other sites.”

and

“While site speed is a new signal, it doesn’t carry as much weight as the relevance of a page. Currently, fewer than 1% of search queries are affected by the site speed signal in our implementation and the signal for site speed only applies for visitors searching in English on Google.com at this point.”

and

“We encourage you to start looking at your site’s speed (the tools above provide a great starting point) — not only to improve your ranking in search engines, but also to improve everyone’s experience on the Internet.”

You may also consider these:

There are large number of complaints about the fact that Google’s own Analytics script is a known load-time decelerator, and about the almost glacially slow rendering times of AdSense code.

Sweb sites speed is still just a single one of over two-hundred signals Google uses to assess a site’s rankings. And let’s also remember that Google is first and foremost about delivering relevant results, just as it always has been.

Matt Cutts himself said: “People shouldn’t stress out too much about Site-Speed, and the reason is that we’re always going to care first and foremost about quality. How good is a page for users?” Addressing Site-Speed’s function in assessing SERPs, he also said: “Don’t think it’s going to be the largest of the two-hundred factors.”

Free tools to evaluate how well your site performs on web speed wise:

YSlow, a free tool from Yahoo! that suggests ways to improve website speed.

WebPagetest shows a waterfall view of your pages’ load performance plus an optimization checklist.

In Webmaster Tools, Labs > Site Performance shows the speed of your website as experienced by users around the world as in the chart below.
