If you place link to let's say NYtimes.com with rel="nofollow" Google sees you don't trust NYtimes... But why don't trust such authority web-resource? Remember "nofollow" is not about page rank officially; no matter that webmasters use it mostly to 'preserve link juice', but you will never hear from Google about link juice.
